Alberta Fires Press Release (10/05/2016)

 Association of Psychology Newfoundland Labrador (APNL) Presents Public Session on Coping with the Psychological Impact of the Alberta Wildfires

(St. John’s, Newfoundland) May 10, 2016.  

Many families from Newfoundland and Labrador have been significantly impacted by the wildfires in Fort McMurray and surrounding area. This impact is being felt by families worried about loved ones in Alberta, individuals forced to return to NL either temporarily or more permanently, as well as individuals distressed by images on the news and social media.

APNL will be hosting a public information session on Thursday May 19th, 7-9pm at the Hampton Inn, St. John’s.  The session is open to all members of the general public.  Admission is free, although donations to the Red Cross will be gratefully accepted. 

Topics will include:

  • common reactions immediately following a disaster
  • coping strategies for common symptoms
  • how to help kids cope
  • warning signs for when professional help may be needed and where/how to seek help.
